PIENZA During the Antiquity, it was named "Castello di Corsignano", afterwards it took the name of Pienza to honour the Pope Pius II Piccolomini, which, in the second half of the 15th century, allowed the famous architect named Rossellino to restructure the village, creating an ideal country town. The most important jewel is certainly the Dome, which encloses many wonderful artworks from the Renaissance. |

MONTICCHIELLO Monticchiello, preserves the austere ideals of the medieval fortresses, which oppeses clearly the art inspired by the Renaissance as seen in Pienza. After 1200, the village has taken an appearance, which has remained unchanged up to now, with the great girded walls and the church, which rises at the center, dedicated to the Saints Leonardo and Cristoforo. It remains still a whitness to the period of greatest prosperity and encloses many paintings from the 14th and 15th century. |
